Officials: Nearly 100 displaced by Yonkers fire
More than 50 families were displaced after a Yonkers building fire on Wednesday.
Fire officials says flames broke out at 1 Hawley Terrace, near Warburton and Odell avenues, around 3 a.m. Fire officials say one person has died. They haven't released any details about the victim, other than that a body was discovered on the fifth floor.
The displaced residents were taken to the nearby Police Athletic League building on North Broadway in Yonkers for temporary shelter. Many of those people are senior citizens.
Red Cross volunteers set up cots and put out blankets for the victims. In addition to emotional support, the Red Cross also provided so-called comforts kits, which included toothbrushes, deodorant and washcloths.
City Councilman Michael Sabatino says the city will reach out to other Yonkers residents to help the families forced out of their homes. Habitat For Humanity of Westchester also says it is working hard on behalf of the fire victims.
Red Cross officials tell News 12  that they will provide financial assistance and replace lost medication for displaced families. They say several social services agencies will be at the Police Athletic League Thursday to help the families displaced by the fire.
