Cuomo begins laying groundwork for re-election bid
Democratic New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo is formally laying the groundwork for his re-election campaign and possibly beyond.
The man tapped with leading Cuomo's high-stakes attempt at a third term in office is no stranger to Westchester political circles. Bronxville Democrat and former Wall Street investment banker Bill Mulrow was hand-picked to serve as chairman of Cuomo's 2018 campaign after spending two years as the governor's secretary.
It's a move that's going over well with Cuomo's hometown fans in New Castle. Nearly everyone News 12 spoke with during a busy lunch hour in Mount Kisco said they are fairly confident that Cuomo has his sights set on challenging President Trump in 2020.
The governor himself won't confirm if any of it is true, but his rising national profile, international travel and the hiring of prominent Florida fundraisers, in addition to getting free college tuition included in the latest state budget, all point to a man with eyes set on the White House.
Cuomo was expected to hold a pricey fundraiser for his campaign Tuesday night in Manhattan. As far as a Republican challenger goes, Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino is considering a second attempt at unseating Cuomo.
