Married couple fatally struck by drunken driver in Massapequa Park
A drunken driver struck and killed a married couple in Massapequa Park Saturday night, officials say.
Barbara and Melvyn Glickman, of Melville, were crossing Merrick Road just east of Park Blvd. around 8 p.m. when they were struck and killed by an alleged drunk driver.
"We were sitting by the front of the restaurant and we heard a loud bang and we saw a lot of commotion," says Jake Burbar, who witnessed the incident. "I saw the driver that hit him being led away in handcuffs."
The 77-year-old victims were taken to a nearby hospital where they later died.
John Hartwig, 63, is facing several charges including DWI and two counts of vehicular manslaughter.
The Massapequa man appeared before a judge Sunday in Hempstead, and is facing two counts of vehicular manslaughter.
In court, Hartwig's lawyer says he is an owner of McQuades restaurant in Lynbrook.
Prosecutors say Hartwig registered a 0.13 blood alcohol level, nearly twice the legal limit.
