Playing with Fire: Monsey yeshiva shut down for violations
Officials shut down a yeshiva in Monsey after building inspectors found dozens of safety violations.
Ramapo town inspectors found the violations the school at 33 Forshay Road in Monsey, which is operated by Congregation Ateres Yisroel. It marks the first time that the town has shut down an entire yeshiva.
An illegal matzo oven proved to be the yeshiva's tipping point earlier this week.
Rockland County Executive Ed Day says he is glad that actions were finally taken against the yeshiva, which has been a thorn in Ramapo's side for years.
The illegal matzo oven is now gone, and News 12 is told that piles of garbage have been cleared. A replacement yeshiva is under construction on Maple Avenue, but it could be months before it opens.
