Man who touched underage co-workers gets probation
An ice cream shop worker who pleaded guilty in March to forcibly and inappropriately touching two underage co-workers was sentenced Monday to probation.
Khalid Chohan was arrested two years ago after two girls, then ages 15 and 17, said they were sexually assaulted by him. A security camera captured the incidents at the Long Beach Carvel shop where they all worked.
The mother of one of the victims begged the judge Monday for the maximum sentence of a year in jail. However, Judge Frank Dikranis said that because Chohan pleaded guilty to a lesser misdemeanor charge, all he could do was give him three years of probation and mandatory psychological counseling.
Because Chohan's guilty plea only involved a misdemeanor charge, he will not have to register as a sex offender. Laura Ahearn, of Parents for Megan's Law, says Chohan's lenient treatment is the result of a loophole in state law, which she says needs to be changed.
The judge did say on the record that he had to follow sentencing guidelines and that the laws should possibly be changed.
News 12 is told the two girls are still shaken. Their mothers say the girls are trying to move on with their lives.
