Sparrowbush man gets five years for killing rape suspectPosted: Updated:
An Orange County man was sentenced Tuesday to five years in prison for the shooting death of a wanted fugitive.
David Carlson, of Sparrowbush, was found guilty of first-degree manslaughter in Orange County Court in Goshen in November 2016.
Prosecutors say Carlson killed fugitive rape suspect Norris Acosta-Sanchez three years ago. Acosta-Sanchez allegedly raped a 14-year-old girl and had previously evaded police.
Carlson's defense attorneys said he fired on Acosta-Sanchez in self-defense while trying to apprehend him.
The victim's mother didn't want to go on camera, but in a letter to the court said her son didn't deserve to die and that justice needs to be served.
Once released, Carlson will serve 2 ½ years' probation. His attorneys say they plan to appeal.
