Historic home saved from flames

Posted: Updated:

Firefighters saved a 250-year-old home from catching fire after a cottage on the property went up in flames in Monsey overnight.

Fire officials say they were called to 246 Route 306 around midnight and found a back cottage burning. The owners had to flee for their lives. "We had to run out of house in our PJs. Flames were 50 feet in the air and we thought were going to lose everything -- but we didn't,' says Denman Maroney. Maroney and his wife say the main home was built in the 18th century and is on the National Register of Historic Places. "The main house is 250 years old and they saved that. We are very grateful for their service."

No injuries were reported.

Officials say the cause of the fire does not look suspicious, but is still under investigation.
