Spring Valley village trustee arrested on corruption charges
Police say they arrested Spring Valley Village Trustee Vilair Fonvil Tuesday on corruption charges.
Fonvil is accused of pocketing money from the village that was intended to go toward busing and monitors for kids heading to camp last summer. He pleaded not guilty in Rockland County court to felony charges that include corrupting the government, grand larceny, money laundering and receiving award for official misconduct.
Fonvil's attorney says the longtime public figure has nothing to hide and will continue his role as trustee while fighting the charges.
Jermika Depas, a co-defendant in the case, is accused of helping Fonvil cash checks meant for the bus company and monitors. Depas also pleaded not guilty.
The arrests came a few weeks after the federal government raided Spring Valley Village Hall and left with a number of boxes and paperwork.
The judge ordered Fonvil and Depas to be released on their own recognizance. They're due back in court in June. If convicted, each defendant faces up to 10 years in prison.
Fonvil is also a key witness in the corruption trial involving Spring Valley Mayor Demeza Delhomme.
