Westchester County Jail could house ICE detainees
The Westchester County Jail could house immigrants detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Authorities confirm that an email was sent from the Department of Homeland Security back in February to the jail asking if it was interested in housing ICE detainees.
The deputy commission told News 12 that the inquiry was preliminary and added in a statement, “Our agency often accommodates requests from other federal, state and local law enforcement agencies for assistance, including to house prisoners on a case by case basis."
Employees and volunteers at Neighbors Link in Mount Kisco work directly with the community, offering programs to assist new immigrants with language, culture and understanding American laws.
Carola Bracco, the executive director of the group says since the inception of the Trump Administration, there has been significant fear in the community.
Bracco says she believes that local law enforcement and immigration should only partner to the extent required by law, which doesn’t include honoring immigration detainees or using local facilities and local resources.
She says it blurs the lines and could hurt the community more than help it - especially if an undocumented immigrant wants to report a crime without fear of deportation.
