Closing arguments presented in Spring Valley mayor impeachment trial
Attorneys presented closing arguments Wednesday in the impeachment trial of Spring Valley Mayor Demeza Delhomme.
Delhomme is fighting for his job despite dozens of misconduct charges, including accusations that he discriminated against Jews and used a village-owned vehicle, gas card and E-ZPass for personal trips to his North Carolina vacation home.
The attorney representing the Spring Valley residents who want to oust the mayor, describes Delhomme as having  "no regard for the rule of law."
"This man has proclaimed himself to be the 'king of Spring Valley'.  What does that mean?  It means by the circumstances of what he's engaged in, he amounts to being a local dictator,” he says.
The defense says the embattled mayor did nothing wrong, and in fact, used the SUV for the village's benefit. The defense says that once of the trips to North Carolina involved Delhomme meeting with hotel officials that resulted in a new hotel being built in the village.
The trial for Delhomme’s alleged misuse of the village-owned vehicle is set to begin on May 8 in Rockland County.
The attorney for his impeachment trial have until May 15 to submit any additional legal documents in the impeachment case.
The decision on whether to impeach Mayor Delhomme will be made by the Appellate Division of the State Supreme Court.
