Lawmaker wants term limits for elected officials in Mount VernonPosted: Updated:
A Mount Vernon City Council member wants term limits for elected officials in the city.
City Council Member Andre Wallace is hitting the pavement gathering signatures in the hope of getting enough to force a referendum on the issue on the November ballot.
Elected officials in Mount Vernon can currently run for four-year terms as many times as they want, and Wallace says that’s a problem.
Wallace wants to limit terms to a maximum of three four-year terms, which would equal 12 years in office.
He says he will need about 5,000 signatures to get this on the November ballot.
So far, Wallace has gathered about 1,500 signatures. His goal is to gather 10,000.
