Hard-hit Orange County dried out Tuesday after Monday’s heavy rains caused flash flooding in some areas.
First were the ominous funnel clouds seen by viewers in Kiryas Joel and the dark skies in Pine Island on Monday. By late-afternoon Monday, heavy rains and flash flooding hit areas like Middletown and Wallkill.
The storm flooded parts of Route 211 East and Silverlake Scotchtown Road in Wallkill, burying some basements in more than a foot of water.
Utility reps with Orange and Rockland say 4,000 customers in the Hudson Valley lost power at the height of the storm.
City officials say Middletown received more than 2 inches of flash flooding at the height of the downpour. Authorities say the city's drainage system has undergone improvements paid for with FEMA money, but that more still needs to be done. Officials say plans to build a detention pond to help prevent future flooding is in the works.
