New Rochelle council chooses developer for firehouse plan
The New Rochelle City Council has decided on the developer that will transform the land at 45 Harrison St.
MacQuesten Development was selected to transform the land into a mixed-use high-rise. The building will replace the city's largest fire station, which sits on the corner of Harrison and Cedar streets.
The developer is also required to provide an alternate space for the firehouse.
"We have the preeminent firehouse designer and construction manager," said Joe Apicella, of MacQuesten Development. "We're prepared to start construction of the firehouse simultaneous with the construction of the tower.”
News 12 spoke with fire officials who welcome the change, saying their operations will not be affected during or after construction.
News 12 is told the new firehouse will remain close to its original location but will be bigger and likely house more firefighters.
Officials say the new development will provide an economic boost to the area, but some neighbors believe the neighborhood doesn't need it.
Officials hope construction on the $110 million project will begin sometime next year.
