Village stops Monroe estate owner from hosting prom pictures

The owner of a historic estate in Orange is accused of violating building code and causing a public safety hazard after opening his doors to students for senior prom pictures.
Rest Haven owner Timothy Mitts invited students and their parents last month to his historic home, which was once visited by blind author Helen Keller.
Officials say despite what appears to be good intentions, local law still prohibits any large gatherings in the village. A neighbor showed News 12 a picture of what the street looked like during one of the events, describing it as a "mob scene."
"If there was any emergency, vehicles that had to get up and down the street, there was no way," she said.
Mitts has agreed not to host any more gatherings and has canceled plans to host a graduation party this week.
