Mourners gathered Wednesday to honor an 8-year-old Putnam Valley girl who died in a roadside accident in New England over the weekend.
Fatima Charlene Martinez Garcia was traveling in a two-car caravan on Interstate 90 in Upton, Massachusetts when one of the vehicles got a flat tire.
Garcia exited a Toyota Camry and stood behind the vehicle on the side of the road as the driver got out to help change a tire on a Jeep Wrangler.
Then a Chevy Tahoe, swerving to avoid other traffic, slammed into her. She was rushed to a hospital but died of her injuries.
Friends and relatives attended her wake Wednesday night in Shrub Oak.
She was a student at Putnam Valley Elementary School.
