Free college tuition plan for NY residents is a hit in HV

VALHALLA -

The free college tuition program is turning out to be a big hit in the Hudson Valley and across the state.

Tens of thousands of students have applied for the Excelsior scholarship, and applications at local colleges are increasing substantially.

State lawmakers passed a law this spring granting free college tuition to anyone attending a state school if they met the financial requirements.

Applications are up at SUNY Purchase, and Westchester Community College had more than 1,000 people apply just because of the program

Despite its apparent success, the program remains controversial. Privately, some students complain that it doesn't cover room and board or books. Many across the state also say they don't believe tax dollars should be spent this way.

Advocates of the program believe free tuition will put more students in colleges, which they believe is worth it whatever the cost.
