Indian Point tests sirens

Posted: Updated:
BUCHANAN -

The Indian Point Energy Center in Buchanan conducted a full-system activation test of its siren system Wednesday evening.

As part of the regular quarterly test, sirens sounded at full-volume for four minutes. Because it was only a test, the public wasn't required to respond during the siren sounding.

During an actual emergency, the sirens would not be a signal to evacuate.  They would sound off followed by instructions on the Emergency Alert System on television and radio stations.

The Indian Point Energy Center is home to two operating nuclear power plants and supplies about 25 percent of power used in New York City and Westchester County.
