Drivers urged to be careful as school goes back into sessionPosted: Updated:
Kids are heading back to school next week, and that means drivers need to be extra careful around school buses.
Jordana Levy, of New City, is excited about starting middle school, but she'll need to be careful walking to the bus.
According to state law, when a school bus flashes its red lights, traffic in both directions must come to a complete stop.
However, not everyone follows the rules. Clarkstown police last year handed out 10 tickets in just three days for people not stopping for school buses.
Another problem is distracted driving. A recent study by SafeKids.org shows that one out of six drivers traveling through a school zone were busy eating, reading or on their cellphones.
Clarkstown police say they'll be out in full force next week, ready to ticket anyone who fails to stop for school buses.
