Mariano Rivera, White Plains neighbors upset over proposed school site

WHITE PLAINS -

The proposed site of an exclusive private school is upsetting nearby White Plains residents, including a New York Yankees legend.

The French American School of New York wants to build a school for middle- and high-schoolers on the site of the former Ridgeway Country Club. The site is very close to the multimillion-dollar home of former New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera on Ridgeway Road.

Rivera reportedly wrote a letter to the mayor of White Plains, calling the project "unworkable and unsafe."

His house sits right next to the Westchester Hills Golf Club, which is about 100 yards diagonally across from the French American School of New York.

Geoff Thompson, a spokesman for the school, says the project has undergone extensive safety and environmental studies. He say he's perplexed why Rivera would set up residence in the area if he had that many concerns.

"I'm not why he would, knowing that, he would go in and build a very elaborate and lovely home on this property if he was that concerned",” he says.

Other neighbors say environmental studies done on the project are full of errors.

The school hopes to get the go-ahead from the city to start building soon, but Rivera and other neighbor hope that day will never come.

News 12 reached out to Rivera’s representatives but has not heard back.
