Manhunt for robbery suspect closes Irvington schools

IRVINGTON -

A massive manhunt for an alleged armed robber near an Irvington school canceled classes for hundreds of students Friday.

"Schools were closed out of an abundance of caution," says Mayor Brian Smith. "We had to make a decision."

Officials first delayed opening by two hours after reports of a shotgun-toting, emotionally disturbed man in the woods near the school. Later, they decided to close all of the village's schools for the day. They have identified him as 36-year-old Larhn Davitt and are accusing him of robbing a cab driver.

"I woke up, and I was just confused," says Eric Pastarnack, who like many peers just began the fall semester this week. "Why don't we have school today?"

After a massive police search overnight, authorities say they found and arrested an unarmed Davitt near the woods along Cyrus Field road in Ardsley.

Officials took him into custody and later found a shotgun in the woods.
