Residents in a small Orange County village are at odds over a decision that some say puts an end to a local tradition.
For decades, a siren went off at the Montgomery Fire Department every day at noon and whenever volunteer firefighters needed to be alerted of a call.
The department says that the alarm is no longer needed and will be replaced by more modern methods of communication.
Firehouse officials say neighbors often complained about the noise, but people in support of the siren say they want it back and created an online petition that has more than 200 signatures.
They say while text alerts and beepers may have replaced the siren for firefighters, the old-fashioned alarm still worked to warn people nearby to steer clear of the firehouse during an emergency.
The Montgomery fire chief says the Board of Fire Commissioners was notified of the decision to stop using the siren without opposition or concern.
