The board at the Rose Memorial Library is planning to take the town of Stony Point to court in their fight to receive funds for a new facility.
The library has been pushing for a proposition on the ballot in November to let the public decide if the town should increase their annual contributions by about $717,000 to purchase and renovate a larger building down the road.
The library's submissions to Stony Point for such an increase was rejected by the town clerk.
Town Attorney Brian Nugent says the first submission was denied because it didn't reflect if their meeting had a quorum, while a second resolution was rejected because it was after the deadline.
Library officials say their current 3,500-square-foot space is not big enough for the community they serve.
"We don't have the room to have a program for more than 12 people as it is now. We serve a community of 15,000," says library director James Mahoney.
Officials estimate the proposed increase in the library budget would mean taxes in Stony Point would increase by about $90 per household.
