Truck hauling Gummy Bears crashes into Rye yard
A truck driver was treated for minor injuries Friday after his tractor-trailer careened off the highway and into the yard of a Rye home.
State police say the driver was hauling Gummy Bears and Swedish Fish candy when he lost control of his rig on the exit ramp from I-287 to I-95 around 6 a.m. He then smashed through a guardrail and into a grove of trees – ending up in the yard at 465 Grace Church Road.
No one in the nearby houses were injured. The driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
State police are investigating whether speed, distracted driving or anything else was a factor in the incident.
"This is a very potentially horrific accident. The driver is lucky. If he left the roadway 10-15 yards back, he would have gone down an embankment and we may have had a different outcome," says City of Rye Public Safety Commissioner Michael Corcoran.
