Vegas travel agent pleads guilty to defrauding churches

WHITE PLAINS -

A Las Vegas travel agent accused of scamming two Westchester Catholic churches unexpectedly pleaded guilty in White Plains federal court Wednesday.

Vincent Maffucci confessed to taking more than $200,000 from the two parishes, for which he promised to organize church tours to Europe. Prosecutors say instead he used the money for himself on things like dinners, clothing and gas.

He is allowed to return to Las Vegas for the time being but will return to Westchester in January for his sentencing. He could spend up to 27 months in jail.

Parishioners at the two affected churches, St. Theresa's in Briarcliff and St. Patrick's in Yorktown Heights, are still seeking answers for how and why this happened.

News 12 caught up with Maffucci after leaving court, but he declined to comment.
