Traffic set to switch on new Gov. Mario Cuomo BridgePosted: Updated:
Drivers will soon be saying goodbye to crossing the old Tappan Zee Bridge.
The NY State Thruway Authority announced all traffic will move to the first span of the new Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge the night of Friday, Oct. 6.
Four lanes will be open in both directions, separated by a concrete barrier. This pattern is similar to how traffic was on the old bridge.
The move is only temporary since the second span of the new bridge is scheduled to open next year.
Commuters in Rockland are excited to hear that things are moving along and the switch comes weeks earlier than planned. "I know they said it was not taking as long as they expected, but I didn't know it was finishing this quickly," says Frantzcesca Gen-Charles, of New City.
There will be lane closures in both directions on the Thruway as crews shift traffic onto the new span so drivers can expect delays the night of Oct. 6.
