YONKERS -

A Yonkers man will spend 14 years in prison after police found him with 70 kilograms of heroin and $2 million in cash.

Jose “Hippie” Mercedes Sr., 49, pleaded guilty in September, one day before his trial was set to begin.

The drugs were found underneath a trap compartment in the floor of his vehicle in the Fieldston section of the Bronx. Police say the drugs had a street value of $50 million and was the largest single cache of heroin ever seized in New York City by the DEA.

Federal authorities say this shipment could have yielded over eight million doses of heroin or the equivalent of one dose for each adult and child living in New York City.  They add that Mercedes was a drug kingpin that that was responsible for distributing hundreds of kilograms of heroin in the New York City area and throughout the Northeast.
