Coastal Flood STATEMENT in effect for:
Brewster teacher to face rape chargesPosted: Updated:
A teacher at Brewster High School is facing several felony charges, including statutory rape, after allegedly having an inappropriate relationship with a student.
According to the Putnam County Sheriff's Department, Christopher Vlangas, 41, engaged in a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old female high school student. Vlangas was a naval science instructor in the school's Navy Junior ROTC program.
According to his online profile, Vlangas is a retired U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer. He also served as marching band advisor at the school and had been working there since 2015.
Investigators say it was earlier this month when a staff member at the high school received information about the alleged relationship between Vlangas and the student and immediately informed police. An investigation was launched and Vlangas was arrested at his Connecticut home yesterday.
School officials say Vlangas was prohibited from having any contact with students and was banned from school property during the investigation and that remains in effect.
A letter was sent home to parents that said, in part, "Student safety is of paramount importance and we find these allegations deeply troubling."
School officials say counselors have been meeting with students.
Christopher Vlangas is currently being held in Connecticut and is expected to be extradited back to New York.
