Voters approve Proposition 4, split Kiryas Joel from Monroe

Posted: Updated:
MONROE -

Monroe voters approved Proposition 4 Tuesday, splitting the Hasidic Village of Kiryas Joel from Monroe to create their own town of Palm Tree.

The margin was wide, with 83 percent of voters saying yes to the proposition and 17 percent saying no.

With the vote, Kiryas Joel's bloc vote will no longer impact Monroe's elections, and the growing municipality will be given 56 acres of land.

The proposal also separates school districts and puts a 10-year freeze on requests for more land.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of the story mistakenly said the proposition would mean the town of Palm Tree would split from Kiryas Joel.
