Bridgeport police said Saturday that two separate arrests this week resulted in the confiscation of multiple high-capacity magazines -- and the United States Secret Service is investigating after one of the arrests uncovered a threat against the life of President Donald Trump.
Police say they pulled over a driver who was suspected of having firearms with high-capacity magazines at the intersection of Caroline and Arctic streets just before 10 p.m. Friday.
Authorities say they ended up arresting 34-year-old Martin McKenzie and 38-year-old Locksley Raffington, who are convicted felons with a history of firearms offenses.
Bridgeport Police Chief AJ Perez says that two days prior, police arrested a separate suspect who had hid a fully-loaded AR-15 semi-automatic assault rifle in a bag.
Police are not releasing the name of that suspect because they say the U.S. Secret Service has taken over the investigation after a letter was found with the weapon in which the man threatened the life of President Donald Trump.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal says a threat on the life of a U.S. president is disturbing enough and that what's also upsetting is two high-capacity magazines being recovered in separate cases during the same week.
"That's why the toxic combination of semi-automatics and high-capacity magazines spreads death on the streets of Bridgeport and around the country," he says.
Community activist Tony Barr says assault rifles have become dangerously prevalent in Bridgeport.
"It creates that atmosphere or environment for a loss of life," he says.
Police say McKenize and Raffington are each being held on $50,000 bonds.
