Activists took to the streets of Ossining Sunday to protest the removal of feral cat shelters in the village.

Paula Garber, president of the Cat Protection Council of Westchester, says she tried to talk with the new village manager after she removed two winter shelters for feral cats behind the Central Avenue firehouse, but was refused.

So Garber took to Facebook, asked cat lovers to email the village manager and received an outpouring of support.

On Friday, Garber says the village manager called in an animal control officer to remove 10 more cat shelters.

The cats, which are part of a managed colony, are all spayed and neutered through a trap and return program.

The village reportedly has a new code that does not allow feral cats to be housed or fed on public property, but Garber says the animals need protection for the time being.

"We just want the shelters returned so we can have a conversation that works for everybody," she says.

The activists are now making their own makeshift shelters so the cats won't be left out in the cold.
