Water has been restored in Bridgeport following a large water main break Monday night that shut down roads, flooded homes and closed an elementary school.
But roadway near the intersection of Park and North avenues requires additional repairs, and drivers faced detours in the area, one of the city's busiest, throughout the day.
Crews had to dig up a stretch of pavement to replace the 16-inch main that Aquarion officials say broke and flooded the area. The initial water shutdown affected about 100 homes and the Geraldine Johnson School, the water utility says. Service was restored around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Fire officials say there was so much water it caused the road to buckle.
"There was a fair bit of pressure," says Deputy Chief Ron Rolfe. "The collapse was really our worry on that gas line."
Officials say there were no problems with the gas line, but the area will have to be repaired and repaved. It was not immediately clear how long that would take.
Aquarion says some customers may experience discolored water. Those who do should call the customer service center at 1-800-733-9678.
