A Bronx woman married the love of her life recently—her homeland of Puerto Rico.
Mariposa Fernandez took the plunge and said I do to the land she loves.
There was even a full wedding ceremony in Hunts Point attended by 100 guests who brought gifts, but not for the happy couple.
Fernandez's courtship is an expression of her love for Puerto Rico, she says, but it's also a way for the native to raise funds for her country after it was hit by two natural disasters.
"Hit by not just one hurricane, but two, and I saw that there was just a need to bring people together," Fernandez says.
She says she created an online wedding registry where people can buy items to donate.
"I've been sending little packages, a lot of seeds," she says. "This solar light bulb."
She encourages anyone traveling to the island to take extra packages for Puerto Rico inside of their luggage.
