MIDDLETOWN -

Authorities say an off-duty Rockland County sheriff's deputy suffered a single gunshot wound to the head while driving in Woodbury.

According to state police, 42-year-old Frank Farina, of Stony Point, was driving on Long Mountain Parkway when he was shot around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. After the shot, they say the deputy's car crossed the center line and ran off the road, hitting a rocky embankment.

Further circumstances surrounding the incident were not immediately clear.

Farina was later pronounced dead at Orange Regional Medical Center in Middletown. His passenger, 42-year-old Jennifer Farina, suffered injuries not considered life-threatening.

State police say Farina worked as a sheriff's deputy in the Rockland County Corrections Division.
