A second person has been charged in the stabbing death of a Jersey City father who was killed while trying to protect his young son from being robbed.
Hudson County authorities arrested 19-year-old Nasiar Day, of Newark, on Thursday, two days after police found 30-year-old Jose Malave in the doorway of his Jersey City apartment.
Day is charged with murder, armed burglary and weapon offenses. He remains in custody and it is not clear whether he has a lawyer to comment on his behalf.
A 17-year-old Jersey City teen was also charged with murder. He was arrested Wednesday.
Family members say that Malave's son had been targeted earlier in the day for his sneakers by a group of teenagers. Relatives say that the teens came to Malave's Palisade Avenue home and he defended his son when an altercation ensued.
Malave was found stabbed in the doorway of his home. He died at the hospital.
A GoFundMe page has been set up asking for donations to help Malave’s family pay for funeral arrangements and with the expenses of his 11 children.
The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
