A Paterson man has been indicted on 22 counts in the slayings of eight people during a terror attack on a bike path in New York City.
Sayfullo Saipov was indicted Tuesday in Manhattan federal court.
Saipov was arrested after he allegedly ran down a group of people on a bike bath in the city on Oct. 31. Authorities called the act terrorism.
The indictment includes charges that Saipov provided material support to the Islamic State group, and it includes numerous offenses that can carry the death penalty upon conviction.
He's being held without bail. A message left with his attorney was not immediately returned.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Saipov was charged with killing "eight innocent people ... in a calculated act of terrorism in the heart of one of our great cities."
The indictment comes as the family of one of the victims, New Milford resident Darren Drake, says that they intend to file a lawsuit against the city of New York, according to published report.
The Drakes say that they feel that an unsafe environment contributed to the attack. They say that the city should have installed barriers preventing vehicles from entering the bike path.
The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
