HARTSDALE -

Family members are demanding answers about how a 21-year-old man died while in police custody in Hartsdale last week.

Police say 21-year-old Johnathan Maldonado died after allegedly stealing a cellphone from the Best Buy in Hartsdale.

Authorities say he was tackled by store employees at nearby Webb Field and say he ingested packets of an unknown substance.

Greenburgh police officers used a Taser on him moments before he went into cardiac arrest. He later died at the hospital.

There is no official cause of death yet. The state attorney general is now leading the investigation into what happened.

Maldonado's family says he wanted to become a police officer because he believed in the criminal justice system. They say in his memory they intend to see that he gets the justice he deserves.

A funeral Mass will be held Tuesday at Immaculate Conception St. Mary's Church in Yonkers.

Greenburgh police released a statement Monday asking anyone who witnessed the incident to call the New York Attorney General's Office. Maldonado's family also asked anyone who might have information on his death to come forward.
