Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano is soon expected to announce that he will run for the state Senate seat being vacated by Westchester County Executive-elect George Latimer.
"So far the response has been very positive," Spano said. "So I'd like to put that off for about a week."
But when asked if that's a confirmation of his intent to run, Spano coyly said, "How about I'm not going to say no."
Latimer, a Democrat, beat Republican incumbent County Executive Rob Astorino in the November general election to snag the county's top job.
Spano's likely run brings the number of people gearing up to run for the 37th Senate District seat to four.
On Tuesday, recently re-elected Bedford Town Supervisor Chris Burdick threw his hat in the ring. Burdick released a statement touting his record of results in Bedford and saying in part: "I am looking forward to taking that record, and my work ethic, to the next level by representing the residents of the 37th Senatorial District."
The crowded field to replace Latimer also includes someone who already spends a lot of time in Albany. Democratic Assemblywoman Shelley Mayer announced a few weeks ago that she's running. Mayer just picked up the endorsement of the powerful Transport Workers Union Local 100.
Newcomer Kat Brezler is also making a run for the soon-to-be-empty Senate seat. The White Plains resident is a second-grade teacher in the Bronx and a supporter of U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.
There's no word yet on whether a special election will be held to fill Latimer's old seat. That decision is up to Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
So far, no Republicans have announced they're running for the empty seat. If Spano runs and wins, Deputy Mayor Steven Levy would take over the chief executive duties in Yonkers.
