City of Newburgh announces long-awaited pick for police chief

The city of Newburgh announced its long-awaited pick for police chief Tuesday.
Beacon Police Chief Doug Solomon might soon have a new job across the river as the city of Newburgh's police chief. The job has been open for more than two years.
Newburgh City Manager Michael Ciaravino says Solomon, who is also the mayor of Monticello, must first be approved by the city and state civil service commissions. If approved, he'll be expected to step down from his other jobs and move to Newburgh.
Newburgh has had difficulty finding someone qualified to meet city and state requirements since longtime Chief Michael Ferrara resigned in 2015. The city has instead used several acting chiefs in the role.
Ciaravino says Solomon, who didn't return News 12 calls for comment, was ultimately chosen above others because of his extensive administrative and leadership experience.

Newburgh's PBA is on board with the choice to hire Solomon, saying it is excited at the chance to have such a qualified leader.
Newburgh officials say they expect a final decision on their pick for police chief from the city and state within the next few weeks.
