The 2018 calendar for the village of Amityville removes Sept. 11 as a workers holiday, replacing it instead with Black Friday.

Village officials voted 4-1 to eliminate the holiday. The village's 60 employees had off for Patriots' Day on Sept. 11 this past year, but Veterans Day had to be taken away as a holiday to make that happen.

The decision came after village officials polled employees, asking if they'd rather have Sept. 11 or Black Friday off. Employees unanimously decided to take off Black Friday.

Village Mayor Dennis Siry worked as an FDNY firefighter on Sept. 11 and says he thinks it should be a national holiday.

"Maybe the higher-ups in Washington should think about that, but that may be beyond our local government right now," he says.

Even though employees will be working next Sept. 11, Siry says they will still pause to acknowledge the day.
