The new year got off to a tragic start in Warwick when a fire took the life of a senior citizen early Monday morning.

Police say a call came in shortly after 1 a.m. about a fire on Hunt Drive in Village of Florida.

When firefighters arrived, the house was fully engulfed in flames and it took them about three hours to get it out.

Once the fire was out, investigators found the body of 69-year-old Madeline Gwozd on the first floor. Gwozd was the sole occupant of the house.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but does not appear to be suspicious at this time.
