Gov. Mario M. Cuomo bridge construction continues despite bitter blastPosted: Updated:
This week's bitter blast of weather may be keeping many people from stepping outside, but it hasn’t stopped construction on the almost-finished Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge.
Despite temperatures below freezing, crews were bundled up Tuesday working on the approaches for the new span.
The New NY Bridge Project says it has numerous safe-haven locations on site if workers need to take a break and warm up.
Officials say they have specialized equipment such as flotation suits and warmer gear to keep those who work below the bridge on the chilly Hudson River safe.
The New York State Thruway Authority also has specialized crews to help prevent ice buildup and remove snow for construction to continue.
Officials tell News 12 that construction for the bridge is on track and that the southbound span is still expected to open later this year.
