Gov. Phil Murphy, friends and family celebrated his first day as New Jersey’s newest governor with an inaugural ball held on the football field at MetLife Stadium.
Hundreds of people filled a tent erected on the field Tuesday evening.
Murphy and Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver tell News 12 New Jersey that they are humbled by the support and are ready to get to work for the state.
"We have a lot of work to do. Not overnight but if we work together, we will get there,” Murphy told the crowd.
Oliver told News 12, “New Jersey is celebrating going forward. That is what tonight is all about."
Murphy and his wife, first lady Tammy Murphy, took to the dance floor for a dance prior to joining the celebration. He then worked his way through the crowd to shake hands and take pictures.
Murphy was sworn in as the state’s 56th governor Tuesday morning. He used the same Bible former President John F. Kennedy once used. He then signed an executive order declaring equal pay for New Jersey women in the workforce.
Murphy says that he is eager to start his first full day as governor Wednesday.
