A former Suffolk County officer who pleaded guilty in a fatal crash for driving drunk the wrong way has started his prison term.
Robert Scheuerer, 26, surrendered to prosecutors this afternoon, prior to his sentencing.
As part of a plea deal, Scheuerer was promised a three to nine year prison term, however prosecutors have asked for four to 14 years in prison.
Police say the off-duty officer was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes on Sunrise Highway in West Islip in September. According to police, that is when he crashed into a van, killing 37-year-old Brian Fusaro, of Bay Shore.
It was determined that at the time of the accident, Scheuerer had a blood alcohol level twice the legal limit.
Scheuerer will be spending time in the Yaphank Jail while he awaits formal sentencing.
