PA system goes down, girls basketball players pipe up

THIELLS -

The high school girls basketball teams of North Rockland and East Ramapo team took center stage on social media this week -- not so much for their ball-handling skills as for their singing skills.

The girls of both teams sang the national anthem in unison when East Ramapo's PA system went dead Thursday.

"It was really cool because then everyone started singing," says Melina Bautista, a North Rockland player. "You don't really see that often."

A video of the event has garnered hundreds of views on Facebook. Then the North Rockland girls repeated the song at a pep rally Friday -- and that video picked up steam too.

The girls say they'd practiced the song but never sang it publicly before Thursday's game.

Coach Kevin Metcalf says the girls do a lot of singing. And they're pretty good at basketball, too.

North Rockland won Thursday's game 84-34. They've made it to the Section 1 Final Four in the playoffs for the past three years in a row.
