Spring Valley man sentenced to prison in infant's road rage deathPosted: Updated:
The Spring Valley man who pleaded guilty in a road rage incident that left an infant dead received a sentence of 1 1/3 to four years in prison Tuesday.
The Rockland County District Attorney's Office says the sentence is part of a plea deal for Albert Gomez, 63, who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in November.
Prosecutors say Gomez grew angry at a cab driver on Route 59 in Monsey in June. He drove into the shoulder to pass him and struck a woman and her three children.
The accident killed the woman's 3-month-old son, Mayer Braun.
Gomez's attorney read a letter from his client to the judge expressing remorse, apologies and condolences.
"I take 100 percent responsibility for what happened on that day," Gomez said through his lawyer.
"In essence, you destroyed two families," the judge replied. "The Brauns' and your own."
The victim's family did not attend the sentencing, but the DA's office says relatives supported the sentence.
The judge said he would have sentenced Gomez to more time in prison if it were up to him.
