Nassau lawmakers have proposed an amendment to expand the social host law to include opioids and other controlled substances.
Currently, the law prohibits adults from allowing minors to drink alcohol on their premises or for not taking actions after learning about underage drinking.
Officials say they want to punish anyone over 18 years old who lets underage teens do opioids and other drugs at their homes.
"The kids today are sitting around at these pill parties with a bowl of pills and a can of Narcan," says Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder. "The first kid that goes down, they Narcan him to bring him back."
The full Nassau legislature is expected to pass the strengthened social host measure next month.
