Woman breaks barriers as WC’s first African-American commissioner of jurors

A New Rochelle woman is breaking barriers as the first African-American commissioner of jurors in Westchester County.
Dr. Betty Campbell says she knew early on that she wanted a career serving people. The Iona College graduate started out in the Manhattan District Attorney's Office. In her latest career move, the Westchester County Jury Board unanimously appointed Campbell to her position last August.
She and her staff of seven work out of the County Courthouse in White Plains.

"Our office is responsible for doing everything from summonsing to providing juror orientation, helping jurors go through what we call the selection process,” she says.

Campbell says she feels like a trailblazer in her position. She says her hope is young African-American kids will be inspired by her achievement.

Campbell's term as Westchester County commissioner of jurors runs four years.
