The Philipstown Town Board held a public hearing Tuesday on a proposed law that would change how gun owners store their firearms.
The meeting was held in the wake of the Parkland, Florida high school shooting that killed 17 people last week.
Residents called on officials to amend the town code by adopting a law that requires guns be kept in a locked container while not in use.
Marilyn Miller is the head of an organization to voice their opposition to the law.
"It's an unenforceable law, it's a feel-good law. But there are unintentional consequences. Those unintentional consequences is a 20-year study by Yale that it raises crime rates, rapes, burglaries and assaults," Miller says.
Those who oppose the proposed law argue that these types of gun storage laws infringe on privacy. They argue that a better solution is gun safety education.
New York state law already requires gun owners to keep a firearm locked up if they live with a felon, domestic abuser or a person who cannot legally buy a gun because of mental illness.
If adopted by the town, the law would go into effect after being filed with the state.
