Officials say a Lindenhurst woman was killed in a fast-moving fire overnight, despite frantic attempts to save her.

Officials say the fire started just after 3 a.m. at a house on 34th Street.

Retired firefighter Artie Clemens said he heard the glass breaking from the fire and went with his son to get the help of retired FDNY firefighter Tom O'Brien. The three ran into the burning house to see if they could save the woman.

O'Brien's daughter says her father grabbed a ladder, put it over a fence and attempted to get into her bedroom, but couldn't.

“They worked really, really hard until the fire department came, and even the fire department tried to get in and it was just too much,” she says.

Witnesses say the fire was put out quickly, but not before firefighters found the body of 79-year-old Romana Angwin in a downstairs bedroom.

Authorities are still investigating, but they say the fire is not considered suspicious.
