New video released by the NYPD Thursday shows the moments leading up to a fatal police shooting of a man in East Tremont last month.
The body camera video comes from both officers from the 48th Precinct that discharged their guns on East 181st Street and Prospect Avenue on Jan. 29.
In the video, one of the officers is demanding that the suspect, 52-year-old Michael Hansford "drop the knife" at least seven times.
The other officer is also yelling at Hansford to put his "hands up" at least six times. That second officer then tells Hansford to drop the knife at least nine times.
For most of the video, Hansford appears to be walking away from the police, screaming "shoot me" at least a half dozen times before turning towards officers with a knife still in hand.  He says "shoot me" one last time before at least six shots are fired.
Police tell News 12 that Hansford was holding this military-grade knife during this incident. After he was shot, Hansford was taken to Saint Barnabas Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Published reports say that the incident stemmed from a dispute between Hansford and his landlord over rent money. The day after the police-involved shooting, the NYPD coincidentally announced plans to expand the body camera program, saying they would deploy 18,000 new body cams by the end of this year.
